If You Thought Only People Carry Trauma, Think Again š¾

Your dog flinches at a sound you didn't hear. Your cat disappears on the exact day you're dreading. Your old boy has been "just getting older" for two years now, and no one can quite tell you why.
Most pet owners have felt this. That strange sense that the animal knows something.
That they're carrying something.
They usually are. And more often than not, it isn't only their own trauma.
Through animal surrogate hypnosis, I help uncover the emotional patterns that may be affecting both pets and their owners, supporting healing alongside conventional veterinary care.
How animal surrogate hypnosis views the pet as a mirror
Every animal that shares a life with a human is in relationship, not just a practical one, but something closer to a contract. The animal comes to reflect something back. To bring your attention to a place inside you that's still waiting to be looked at.
So the pet becomes a mirror.
Which means the behaviour you're trying to fix, the reactivity, the clinginess, the anxiety, sometimes even the physical symptoms may not be a problem in the animal at all. It may be a signal about the household. And when the thing being reflected is finally resolved in the human, something remarkable becomes possible: the two can be reconnected and rebalanced together, back toward a healthy state.
That isn't a metaphor I use to sound poetic. It's the practical basis of how I work through animal surrogate hypnosis, helping owners and their animals heal together.
Let's look at two of my most recent clients.
Lola: eight months of fear, undone
Lola is a small six-year-old dog who was attacked by a German Shepherd while out on the lead. Her brother was there. So was her owner.
What followed lasted the better part of eight months. Walks became a negotiation. Her confidence collapsed. Her brother became relentlessly overprotective of her, and the whole family dynamic reorganised itself around managing her fear. Eventually she began having panic episodes and showing signs of pain, and her owner took her to the clinic. They ran tests. Everything came back clear.
We did one session.
Lola now plays happily with big dogs. Her brother has stopped guarding her. The family is no longer arranged around a wound.
Here is the part that surprises people: the work was done on the human. Not on Lola.

Val: twelve years old, and the vet is lowering the medication
Val is a small dog of twelve with Cushing's disease. Years of medication. Years of managing pain, including CBD oils. The kind of case where everyone quietly agrees that comfort is the goal now.
After one full session, Val started behaving like a puppy. Running. Taking the stairs at speed. Through a heatwave, which matters, because dogs with Cushing's typically struggle badly with temperature regulation, and Val handled it no worse than any healthy dog.
He has kept improving since. His values have stabilised to the point that his veterinary clinic has recommended reducing his long-standing medication, out of concern that he is now being overmedicated for the condition he actually has.
A twelve-year-old dog. Moving in the opposite direction.

What happens during an animal surrogate hypnosis session?
This is the part people don't expect, so I'll say it plainly.
The session is with you. Not the animal.
We work with your emotional state, your nervous system, and the specific thing your animal has been mirroring back at you, often something you already half-knew was there. Through that work, the field you and your animal share can be accessed and realigned. The animal feels it. The animal responds.
Owners frequently come to me for the pet and leave having resolved something in themselves they'd been carrying for years. The pet, it turns out, was the one who booked the appointment.
If any of this landed
You don't have to believe the mechanism. You only have to have noticed the pattern, that your animal seems to carry your weather.
If you've been managing a behaviour or a condition for months, if the tests keep coming back clear, or if you've simply had the feeling that your animal is trying to tell you something: that's worth a conversation.
I work with animals and their humans, and with humans on their own. If you're looking for animal surrogate hypnosisĀ because your dog, cat or horse is struggling emotionally or physically, I'd be happy to talk through whether this approach may be suitable alongside your veterinary care.
*Lola's and Val's stories are shared with their owners' permission. This work sits alongside veterinary care, never in place of it
always keep your vet involved, and never change or stop prescribed medication without their guidance. In Val's case, the reduction was recommended by his own clinic based on his bloodwork.
